Area schools start classes this week

    Though the temperature reflects a late summer heat wave, the fall season has officially arrived at all area schools. Practices began for area sports teams on Monday. The Huskies open the season Aug. 28 at home against Seward, though the first Aurora team to take the field will be the girls softball team, with first pitch set for Aug. 20 at Lexington. The Aurora High School marching band had its week-long band camp last week where students learned and memorized charts for the opener of their upcoming show, “Pandora Reopened.” The band will be competing at Harvest of Harmony in Grand Island on Saturday, Oct. 2, the Lincoln Links Marching Band Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10 and the NSBA State Marching Band Contest in Kearney on Saturday, Oct. 24. Classes begin at all four area schools this week on varying days. Giltner and Hampton start classes Wednesday and Aurora and High Plains meet for the first day of classes on Thursday.
