Coming all the way from the Czech Republic, Aurora High School senior Betty Marikova is learning to step outside of her comfort zone and take advantage of the opportunity that comes alongside being an exchange student.
Asked about her journey to the United States, Marikova explained it wasn’t originally something she planned.
“My brother was in Idaho for the year of COVID,” she said. “In March of 2020 he had to come back home because of it. But I thought it would never be me.”
Hailing from a humble family, Marikova has another brother in addition to her parents.
“My mom is a math teacher for elementary and middle school,” she explained. “She taught me how to do math for four years. My dad, he’s a research engineer. He does things with computers and programming and stuff, I don’t understand very much of what he does to be honest with you.”
