As variants of COVID-19 continue to spread throughout Nebraska, Central District Health Department health director Teresa Anderson shared how they are affecting the area counties and what people should be on the lookout for.
Looking at case numbers for the district overall, she noted that for the week of June 28 they had six cases. For the week of July 5 as of Thursday, they had 26 reported cases.
“We’re going in the wrong direction,” she said. “What we suspect is that this is the delta variant getting to our district. In order to determine that, we have sent some of our positive tests to the Nebraska Public Health Lab.”
The district’s concern is that the delta variant has been reported to be more transmissible than the previous variants, making it more adaptable as well as more contagious.
In the district she has found that they have had two recent outbreaks and a positive case in a long-term care facility. Their concern is that those who are being hospitalized because of COVID are ages 20-50, a younger population who may not have been vaccinated yet.
