Brothers turn summer gig into year around business

Aurora brothers Mason and Carter Howland have turned an unpleasant task for dog owners into a summer business which they plan to pursue year round. This spring high school junior, Mason, and his brother, Carter, an 8th grader, started a dog waste removal service called M&C Dawg Patrol and they say the enterprise has already developed some possible offshoots.
The boys, sons of Kenny and Stacey Howland, say the inspiration for the business came when they saw other kids cleaning up pet droppings in their yards in Grand Island.
“We started this job mainly because kids in Aurora mow as their job,” Carter explained. “We were wanting to do something different.”
He said they and their dad were brainstorming jobs that teens don’t really do commonly.
Since starting their business in May, the Howland brothers have been cleaning two yards for pet owners each week. People who sign up for their service can have their yards cleaned weekly or biweekly during late morning and afternoon hours.
The brothers are committed to making sure the yards are cleaned on time and will provide alternative times if events such as their golf tournaments or weather conflict with the scheduled time.
“We look ahead at the weather and if one day it’s going to be bad, we can go the day before to pick it up and make sure it’s done before the rain or whatever weather is to come,” Mason stated.
The entrepreneurs also make sure to close any gates and otherwise leave things as they found them—minus the dog droppings, of course.
The brothers pride themselves on making sure that everything they have collected is removed from the property and properly disposed of.
When signing up, clients are asked to provide information as to how many pets they own and are requested to keep their pets indoors while they clean due to Carter’s allergy to dogs.
Despite his allergy, however, Carter said M&G may also provide dog sitting services for clients.
“Our second client asked us if we could baby sit their dog whenever they were gone,” he commented. “That could be a part of our job as well, not just picking up dog poop, but also baby sitting if you need it.”
The business is not just a summer job for the Howland brothers, however. They say they intend to continue the cleaning up yards through the school year.
