What started as a pandemic-era project to get Hampton youth involved with collecting items for the food pantry has evolved into a challenge for several area fire departments.
On or around June 14, fire trucks will be roaming through Hampton, Aurora, Giltner, Phillips and Marquette collecting food items and cash donations for the Hamilton County Food Pantry. Hampton Fire Chief Dane Schafer said the effort was well received last year in his community, so he thought it would be fun, and beneficial, to issue a challenge to other area fire departments.
“Last year the ladies from the Hampton Homemaker’s group approached us to help them,” Schafer recalled. “They were kind of wanting to turn it over to us and we knew that the football team was looking for some community service hours, so that’s when we asked them to help us with that. This year, we plan to do the same thing involving the Hampton football team as well as the volleyball girls, so both the boys and the girls will be helping us cover the whole town and we may even venture out of town to a few houses.”
With the annual Can-Care-A-Van food drive scheduled for June 15, Schafer said the Hampton Fire Department decided to plan its food collection effort the day before.
