4R board hears girls wrestling proposal
Derek Keasling requests more time for data collection
Aurora wrestling coach and middle school physical education teacher Derek Keasling brought a crowd of supporters and a proposal to incorporate girls wrestling as an NSAA sanctioned sport at Aurora High School to Monday evening’s 4R school board meeting.
With girls wrestling officially sanctioned in the spring of this year, Keasling reported that 121 Nebraska schools have registered to add it to their sports lineups. This includes seven Central Conference schools, including Aurora, pending board approval.
“We really just want to educate the school board on this girls wrestling thing that’s kind of happening across the country and also in our school this year,” Keasling began. “Girls wrestling is the fastest growing sport right now across the United States and we’re seeing a lot of tremendous success at the national and world level for our ladies (US) team this year.”
Keasling further noted that Aurora had already registered to be one of the schools starting girls wrestling this year, based on advice from Supt. Jody Phillips, and explained they would only be out a $60 fee if the board decided to go another direction.
