Harvest season ends a challenging, rewarding year

In what has been a topsy-turvey year for local weather and inflation, farmers in Hamilton County report that with the crops now in from harvest the year has had its rewards despite the turbulent conditions of 2022.

Detasseling season tops off despite weather worries

Local youth from a range of ages have officially begun what many consider a summertime rite of passage in rural Nebraska -- detasseling season. As a reminder, detasseling is the process of removing the pollen-producing flowers, or “the tassel,” from the tops of corn plants.

Melvin shares end-of-season irrigation tips

As the days start to grow cooler and shorter it is a signal that harvest is on the horizon. To help prep farmers for end-of-season irrigation, Steve Melvin, irrigated cropping system Extension educator, spoke last week at the Hamilton County Corn Growers test plot tour.
