The season opener looked more like the second or third game of the 2022 campaign Friday for Aurora as the preseason No. 1-ranked Huskies overpowered rival Grand Island Northwest 43-13, keeping the hammer home.
Coach Kyle Peterson said before the game that this team is well ahead of schedule in terms of understanding and executing the offense and defense, which translated into confidence that showed itself on the field.
“Obviously, a lot of things went right tonight,” Peterson said after the game. “In opening games like this you have to avoid plays that can get you beat, and we did that.”
Northwest, on the other hand, made a few key mistakes, including a bobbled snap which led to a blocked punt and the Huskies first score. The two teams traded punts and possessions in the early going, before Devin Danielson got a hand on a Viking punt, setting the home team up at the 29.
