Hampton unable to complete second half rally at home
Hampton was missing two starters for the opening quarter for disciplinary reasons and spotted Sterling 24 points on the scoreboard.
From that point, the Hawks won the rest of the game, 12-8, but lost the final 32-12 in a game that at one point in the second half, looked like a potential Hampton comeback.
First-year Hampton coach Jereme Jones was energetic after the game, telling his players to stay the course because the wins will be there.
“We came back and the defense played outstanding,” Jones noted on a windy night for football. “Evan Pankoke put this team on his back and started making plays. I told the guys I’m so proud of them. Sterling is the No. 7 team in the state and we beat them 12 -8 in the final three quarters. If we were rolling from the beginning, it’s a different game.”
