Hampton passed the first of its two-week test with flying colors.
The Hawks entered St. Edward needing a win to stay in contention for a district championship and went home with a 64-32 win over the Beavers Friday night.
The win for coach Jereme Jones was special, beating a St. Edward team he used to coach years gone by. What happened in the first five minutes didn’t help his blood pressure any.
“My emotions were everywhere early on,” Jones admitted. “We couldn’t stop them early on and they ran exactly what we thought they would, so that was frustrating. The kids responded and kept making plays.”
The start of the game between Hampton and St. Edward had the scoreboard operator working double duty. The two teams combined for five touchdowns in the first 4:10 of the game.
