Shirley (Eckerson) White
Shirley Ann (Eckerson) White, the daughter of Ray S. and Margaret (Lewis) Eckerson, was born at Aurora on Oct. 27, 1931 and died in Tyler, Texas, after suffering a stroke, on June 9, 2022, at the age of 90.
Shirley was united in marriage to Alvin White on Sept. 23, 1967 in Manhattan, Kans.
She graduated from Aurora High School, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wis., and her doctorate from the University of Michigan at Lansing, Mich. She worked at the University of Nebraska, Kansas State University at Manhattan, Kans., and Cornell University at Ithaca, New York. Some of her employment time involved working in Italy and India.
Al and Shirley loved to travel in the summer. They enjoyed going to Maine for the fresh blueberries and drove their RV to Alaska where they enjoyed touring and fishing. After retiring, they would spend their winters at Aransas Pass, Texas, where they enjoyed fishing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Al, brother Garwyn Eckerson, sisters Ruth Tucker, Erma Hines and Willa Martin, step-sons, Kenny and Jim White and nephews, Leonard Eugene Tucker, James Allen Martin and Calvin Hines. She is survived by 20 nieces and nephews.
There will be no memorial service and she will be buried at her husband’s family plot in Wyoming, Minnesota.
