Denny was born on Jan. 24, 1940 in Beatrice to Ernst and Elsie (Loemker) Riekenberg. He grew up in the Filley area until 1952 when the family moved to Hampton. Denny was baptized on Feb. 11, 1940 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Beatrice, and was confirmed on March 29, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton. He then graduated from Hampton High School in 1957. After high school, Denny began working as a mechanic in York, and then in 1961 he started working at the Hordville Co-op. He would work for the local co-op in many different roles for the next 42 years, until his retirement.
On July 8, 1961, Denny married Joyce Staehr at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. They made their home in the Hordville area, until his retirement. Denny was very active within his community and his church throughout his life. Following his retirement they would spend their winters in Texas. While in Texas he would stay busy by volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, and assisted less-fortunate families in Mexico, by helping them create better lives for themselves and children. He was always building things and especially enjoyed his woodworking. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Denny was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Polk.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife; Joyce, of Hordville, his children; Kris (Kim) Shoup of Hordville, Kerri (Jerry) Sundberg of Hordville, and Craig Riekenberg of Tucson, Ariz., his siblings; Joann Schardt of Davenport, Larry (Sharon) Riekenberg of Lincoln, and Vivian (Kenneth) Frost of Fremont, his grandchildren; Kylie (Garrison) Smith, Kinsley (Cody Pietig) Shoup, Katelyn (Logan) Engel, Brandon Sundberg, and Rachel Sundberg, three great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.
