Staehr sets new meet record in triple jump victory

Body

Although a bit soggy and cold, the Huskies found some success at Tuesday’s Central Conference track meet in Lexington.
The Aurora boys ended up in the top three of the team standings, earning 90.5 points behind Northwest’s 159.5 and Seward’s 117.
Aurora coach Kyle Peterson noted the weather presented different sets of challenges throughout the day but was proud of the Husky effort in less than ideal conditions.
“The rain hampered some of our kids early on but we still did some really good things,” Peterson said. “It cleared off for a while and we had some kids do really well.”
Thirty of those points came from event winners as Jayden Slagle and Derek Russell continued their season success in the jumps and discus.
Slagle didn’t set any new high marks for the year, but won the triple jump with a mark of 46-10, downing the field by more than four feet while also taking gold in the long jump at 22-11, besting the crowd by two feet.
“He had a great long jump there,” Peterson said. “Ultimately, we shut him down early and didn’t take a lot of jumps because the most important thing for us is to get him on the bus healthy for districts.”
As for Russell, he was unable to set a new high mark either, but still won the discus with a throw of 187-4, winning by 25 feet. He also finished third in the shot, behind teammate Collin Stolpe. Stolpe threw 53-11, beating Russell by a quarter of an inch.
In fact, Aurora had three of the top four spots in the shot as Jayden Smith was fourth with a toss of 49-8.
“Those guys threw really well with good numbers,” Peterson noted. “We’re really starting to see some consistency from those kids in practice and I’ll be surprised if they don’t all throw over 50 feet at districts.”
Colten Nachtigal added two runner-up finishes for Aurora in the hurdles, running the 110s in 15.22 while finishing the 300s in 42.46, a new PR.
William Evans cleared 5-8 in the high jump to finish third while Kash Kleinschmidt returned to the jump pits to finish sixth in the triple jump at 39-7.25 while Sam Jones was seventh at 38-11.50. Peter Russell added a third in the pole vault, clearing 13-00.
Brett Mellies was third in both the 400 and 800, running times of 51.72 and 2:05.36.
As for the Aurora girls, the Lady Huskies were missing a few from its lineup, ending up sixth overall with 38 points. Northwest won the team title at 118 points ahead of Lakeview and Seward in the top three.
Carrying the flag for the Huskies was Kaitlyn Staehr, setting a new conference meet record in the triple jump with a winning mark of 37-00.25. That moves her to third on Aurora’s all-time list in the event behind Tess Moyer and teammate Stella Peterson, who hit a mark of 37-7 earlier this season. Moyer’s school record mark is 38-2.50 set in 2010.
Staehr added a third in the long jump, reaching a new personal best of 17-2, which moves her to sixth on the Aurora all-time list.
“This is exactly what she did a year ago,” Peterson noted. “She didn’t have those big jumps early in the season but about this time really started to have some big marks. Obviously, in those weather conditions with the wet runways, for her to jump like she did is outstanding. You want kids to peak at this time of year and that’s what she’s doing.”
Aurora’s other winner on the girls side was Jordyn Slagle, finishing first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.90.
Vivi Fahrnbruch ended up seventh in the shot put with a heave of 34-2.75 while Paisley Bartek was fifth in the discus, throwing 111-4.
Ella Eggleston added a fourth place effort for Aurora in the 3200, running under 12 minutes at 11:50.93. Trinity Uhrmacher was sixth in the 300 hurdles at 50.76.
“Ella ran a really good 3200 and is one of those kids that is peaking at the right time,” Peterson said. “We didn’t run her in the relay race and kept her fresh for the open 3200. Hopefully we can get her qualified (in the 3200 run).”
Aurora competed at the B-5 district meet at Central City Tuesday in an effort to qualify for next week’s state track meet at Omaha Burke. The Class B schedule in Omaha is set for May 20-21.
“We have a really tough district,” Peterson pointed out. “In the areas where we have success, there’s a lot of good competition. Our kids will have to perform well.”
