Beloved Huskers deliver a March moment for the ages

Pure madness

So that’s what March Madness feels like when you’re out there dancing.
What Husker Nation experienced Saturday night in Oklahoma City was a gut-wrenching, exhilarating roller coaster ride of emotions that delivered a finish worthy of the moment. A heroic Big Red comeback, capped by a potential Vanderbilt buzzer-beater that just wouldn’t fall, turned this into an instant classic, even for college basketball diehards who’ve seen plenty of madness.
I was so amped after Tyler Tanner’s 60-foot would-be buzz-killer rimmed out that I replayed the highlights, and the fan reactions, over and over and over again. That final minute felt like tonic for the soul after years of heartache, miscues, and, yes, some bad basketball. This time, though, it felt like Husker Time. Everything that had to go right, did, when the pressure was at its peak.
There were so many angles that made this a compelling story, if not THE compelling March Madness story of the opening week. The headliner, of course, was Nebraska shedding its label, finally and forever, as the only Power 4 program without an NCAA tournament win. Backing it up two days later with a trip to the Sweet 16 proved that 28-6 record and No. 4 seed were no accident.
And then there was the Hoiberg story. Fred Hoiberg continues to embody exactly how Nebraskans want their teams to compete and carry themselves. Watching his son Sam carve out his own role with grit and determination, while twin brother Charlie builds toward his own coaching future from the bench (on their birthday no less) added a layer of authenticity you just can’t script. That felt like pure Nebraska.
But one of the most striking scenes of all was the sea of red, six hours from Lincoln, turning a neutral floor into something that felt anything but. Husker Nation has long traveled for football and volleyball, but March basketball? This was new, unfamiliar, enchanting territory that lived up to its hype. And yes, there was Husker Nation: loud, relentless, and impactful. In those final 2.2 seconds, you could almost feel an entire fan base holding its breath, willing that Vanderbilt heave to miss. Okay maybe that’s a stretch, but few would argue that NU fans were worth a point or three in the 74-72 final.
If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and find Kent Pavelka’s radio call of the finish. The beloved voice of the Huskers had spent months setting the stage for how special this team could be, and when the moment arrived that voice carried the weight of it all.
“This is a miracle,” Pavelka said, nearly swallowed by the roar. “It was destined to happen. Nebraska is going to the Sweet 16!”
Pavelka wasn’t just calling a game. He was capturing a moment that will live in Husker history. Because this was one of those nights. The kind you recognize as it’s happening. The kind you know you’ll be talking about 20 years from now.
Which brings up the question every Husker fan will answer in their own way: What will you remember most about the night Nebraska finally danced its way into the Sweet 16? Whatever your answer, one thing is certain. This time, the moment belonged to Nebraska.
