Giltner schools not involved in Aurora’s bond issue discussions

Body

Dear Editor:
I would like to respond to the recent article regarding Aurora Public Schools’ potential bond issue and the mention of possible countywide discussions involving Hampton and Giltner Public Schools.
First and foremost, Giltner Public Schools has not had conversations with Aurora Public Schools regarding the formation of a countywide school district. We are not interested in supporting Aurora’s building plans, nor have we engaged in discussions about consolidation tied to their proposed bond project. While we respect Aurora’s process and their right to explore options that best serve their community, those plans are separate from the direction and priorities of Giltner Public Schools.
It was mentioned that sports cooperatives are part of the broader conversation around consolidation. I would like to clarify that Giltner’s athletic cooperative with Harvard is not due to a lack of overall student numbers. Rather, it is the result of participation numbers in certain winter sports. Our partnership with Harvard has been a positive and collaborative relationship that benefits both districts. It allows our students access to opportunities that would not be possible based solely on current participation levels.
Adding Giltner students to Aurora would not create more opportunities for participation; it would simply place additional students into an already established pool of activities. Our goal is not to increase numbers for the sake of numbers, but to ensure meaningful opportunities for our students.
Giltner Public Schools has a proud tradition of academic and athletic success. We are committed to doing what is best for our students, parents, and community members. We take that responsibility seriously and remain focused on maintaining a student-first, community-centered school environment.
While Aurora’s proposed bond may appear scalable within their district’s valuation, the potential tax burden to the Giltner community under any countywide scenario would be significantly higher than what Giltner Public Schools currently levies — or would reasonably need to levy in the future. Our district remains fiscally responsible while continuing to provide strong educational opportunities.
We welcome any family seeking a student-focused, values-centered small school environment to consider Giltner or Hampton as a great fit for their child. Small schools continue to provide exceptional educational experiences, personal attention, and strong community support.
I encourage any Giltner community member with questions or concerns to visit with me directly. I am always willing to discuss the great things happening in our district and the work we will continue to do for our students.
Sincerely,
Matt Gordon,
Superintendent, Giltner Public Schools
