Vote blue for the greater good
Dear Editor:
I remember my Grandpa Bob, who fought in WWII, telling me that average German citizens didn’t actually support the Nazi agenda, but were merely trying to support their families via their jobs in the German military.
My Grandma Bobbie told me she envied the choices I could make, as a woman, about how to live my life; that I could choose a career vs. being a homemaker, live on my own, support myself, decide to not have children.
My best friend, Candy, was alive when it became legal for women to have credit cards in their own names, not to mention when Roe v. Wade was decided.
I remember after 9/11/2001, hearing many people talk about how weird it was to see TV coverage of extremists peeling around with their flag waving from their pickups. How insane we Americans thought that was.
I am for the rights of all people. I am for the betterment of the human race. I support the idea that all people can live peacefully alongside each other, with equal rights, freedoms, opportunities. I believe it is possible to foster an environment where this scenario is reality.
I believe my granddaughters should be afforded AT LEAST the same rights I’ve had. I can’t believe I have to hope for status quo when, ideally, my sights would be set on much loftier ambitions -- that they will have BETTER rights than I’ve been afforded. The possibility exists they might end up with LESS rights than my grandmothers.
I remember how excited I was to vote for the first time, in 2000. For me, voting has always felt like a really momentous action, a tangible way to participate in our society. Sometimes, in Nebraska, when you support the rights of all people, voting can feel like a futile effort.
Fellow Nebraskans, if you believe in the idea that we ALL have value -- now is the time to make a difference. Cast your vote for those who will represent the interests of the whole, of all of us. Vote for the greater good.
Vote blue. Tell your friends.
