Darlene Maahs
Darlene Maahs, 82, of Grand Island, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at a care home in Grand Island.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora. The family will be greeting from 9 to 10 a.m.. A private family burial of the her ashes will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family; contributions will be designated at a future time.
Darlene Maahs, the daughter of Lila and Leonard Rudolf, was born January 14, 1940 in Palmer, and passed away March 5, 2022.
On January 24, 1959, Darlene married Willis “Bill” Maahs in Grand Island. To this union two children were born; Pamela Marie and Randy Willis. Darlene and Bill called Aurora home for many years. They lived in Kissimmee, FL for a brief time to be closer to their granddaughter and family. They moved back in 2011 and called Grand Island home.
Darlene worked as a nurse aide at Memorial Hospital in Aurora for many years as her children were growing up. She also worked at the Hamilton Motor Inn, Ben Franklin and Hamilton Manor. Her greatest joy was being able to babysit her grandkids, great grandkids and kids of very close friends. Darlene loved springtime, planting flowers and working in the yard; red geraniums and yellow roses were her favorite. Darlene loved to spend time with her family, cooking and playing cards. Darlene was known for making a delicious potato salad.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Pamela Swazo of Lincoln, Randy Maahs (Heaven Hall) of Aurora, three grandchildren, Nichole Swazo of Dacula, GA, Erik Swazo (Paige) of Lincoln, and Justin Ferris (Hillary) of Archer. Five great-grandchildren: Mikayln of Tallahassee, FL, Saniyah and Kingsley of Dacula, GA, Eli and Owen of Archer. She is also survived by her sister Maxine Burke of Grand Island, step-brother Sonny (Bonnie) Sekutera of Loup City, step-sisters Lucille Marsh of Kearney and Renae Chelewski of Hershey. Others left to cherish her memory are sister-in-laws, Kathleen Gade, Marilyn (Merlyn) Dietrick, Ellen Manley and brother-in-law Paul (LeAnn) Maahs, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Darlene was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill, her parents and step-father Clarence Sekutera.
