Five Aurora veterans receive Quilt of Valor honors
Veterans wrapped in quilts by family, honored for service
Tying all of the symbolism of Veterans Day and the program at Aurora High School together, five area veterans were presented with their very own Quilt of Valor courtesy of the Nimble Thimble Quilt Guild and the Hamilton Community Foundation.
“It is especially meaningful to make this presentation with family members, veterans and many from the community here to share in this honor,” Quilt Guild member Jeanette Friesen began.
She continued, addressing the origins of the Quilt of Valor, as well as its meaning, to both community members and veterans in attendance.
Kirt Smith
The first to receive his quilt was Auroran Kirt Smith.
“Kirt Smith served in the US Air Force from 1988 to 1992,” announced Aurora student Andrew Timmons. “He received his basic training at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas, and then medical training at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, followed by clinical training at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas.”
