Hamilton County firefighters paid their respects last week to the Elwood fire chief who lost his life in the line of duty, sending several trucks and personnel to join the tribute to Darren Krull.
Krull died April 7 when the SUV in which he was riding collided head-on with a truck hauling water to a wildfire near Elwood. The blaze spread rapidly and eventually burned more than 35,000 acres.
Firefighters from Aurora, Hampton, Giltner and Phillips joined the funeral proceedings April 13, which drew firefighters from across the state. Firetrucks were parked with lights flashing at every intersection on the drive from the church in Elwood to the cemetery where Krull was buried near Glenville.
