More questions than answers about EMS

Body

Dear Editor:
This letter concerns the continuing struggle to keep the outstanding EMS team that Aurora and Hamilton County are so fortunate to have when it comes to caring for our citizens in emergencies. We have an outstanding, qualified, knowledgeable, caring group of men and women who make life-saving decisions with positive outcomes for our community and county.
I attended the related city council meetings in April at the Bremer Center and earlier this month at the Middle School theater and have come away with more questions than answers.
I realize that there is a shortfall in money for the department, but how was it seemingly allowed to get to the amount in question?
Why was the provider/presenter from Colorado not prepared for questions or have answers much of the time, and why was it not important enough for him to physically be here instead of appearing by technology on a screen? I don’t believe a high school graduation merits staying home to cut up watermelon as he stated many times is valid.
Why weren’t the EMS representatives given the chance to present their proposal at the May meeting? The city council has their proposal, but the citizens should have been able to hear that information from the union representatives.
I realize that our economy has problems, but I also talked to a number of people, like myself, who have had experiences with 911 as caregivers and those needing assistance and we are more than willing to pay more in taxes to keep the service we have alive. If you have never had to call 911, consider yourself fortunate, but odds are that the time is coming that you will need them at your door.
