Returning to our foundation

Dear Editor:
Anyone who has had a problem with the foundation of their home knows that it is not a simple thing to fix.  Every building that stands the test of time is resting upon a sure foundation.  Even a building with a good foundation will eventually fall if you don’t maintain the structure. That is the state we find our nation in today.
Let’s start with the foundation.  It’s generally agreed that America has the oldest surviving Constitution in the world.  It has survived for two and ½ centuries because it was established upon a sure foundation.  That foundation is a Judeo-Christian foundation.  Even though not a Christian at that time, President Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) concluded, “It [the Bible] is the rock on which our Republic rests.”
George Washington said, “Of all the habits and dispositions which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”  He continued, “In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars.”
The Constitution of Nebraska established in 1875 still states today, “Religion, morality, and knowledge, however, being essential to good government, it shall be the duty of the Legislature to pass suitable laws to protect every religious denomination in the peaceable enjoyment of its own mode of public worship, and to encourage schools and the means of instruction.”  The means of instruction in what?  In religion, morality and knowledge.  The basic tenet of religion being, there is a God, a higher power, to whom everyone will be accountable.
We should be so thankful to our forefathers for the foundation laid for us.  But even though we have such a foundation, this building is crumbling.  We are told religion doesn’t belong in the public square, and morality has been replaced by moral relativism.
I would argue that today we are seeing a spirit of lawlessness at work in our land.  It threatens to crumble even the foundations holding our nation in check.  If we don’t return to the “indispensable supports” of “religion and morality” our nation is in peril.
It’s time we repair the structure of the building we live in.  That takes turning back to God.  We’ve messed up a good thing.  Repentance is the starting point.  Thankfully our God is a God of redemption. He can show us the way back.  That, my friends, would Make America Great Again.
