Hawk Nation was brought to its knees this week with the gut-wrenching news that one of their own, a bright, young vibrant coach and teacher, was taken from us too soon.
Kyle Ediger was a friend to all who knew him, carrying a sense of quiet calm and positivity that made him easy to like, play for and work with. A proud Hampton alum, Ediger “bled Hawk purple” and was fiercely loyal to any and all who shared that proud heritage.
This year’s Hawk basketball team is a perfect example of the way Ediger lived his life. Though their record isn’t stellar, the Hawks play with heart and effort each time out, believing when their coach tells them good results will come to the program when you do things the right way, if not this year then in the future. Kyle believed that to the core, and his players believed in him.
Having interviewed Kyle several times after tough losses, I was always impressed with the way he focused on the positive, looked toward the future and put his players in a favorable light. He was a role player back in his playing days and stayed true to that form with a whistle in his hand, understanding that his role was to help shape, guide and mentor young men into the best they can be. He had found his calling as a teacher and coach, and was a natural fit in Hampton, very much at home.
There are no words to explain or try to help understand how and why such a good guy had to meet such a senseless fate. He was most likely in a very good place mentally and emotionally, riding high after a big Hawk win, headed home to his fiance. Kyle had so much to live for and so much yet to offer.
The outpouring of grief, respect and heart-felt tributes offered to Kyle’s family and friends was a testament to the impact he had made and the way he lived his 31 short years of life. That was genuine and uplifting to a community in need, echoing the kind of man he was.
We add our prayers for strength to Kyle’s family and all of Hawk Nation, knowing that his loss leaves a huge void.
Rest in peace, Kyle Ediger.
