A giant Husker letdown
What a disappointment.
While the ending of Friday’s Nebraska/Iowa game was a gut-punch for Husker football faithful, something before the regular season finale is what many are still talking about, for all the wrong reasons.
In case you somehow missed it, the Husker captains refused to shake hands with their Hawkeye counterparts during the traditional pre-game coin toss. It created an awkward moment at the time, obviously, with NU captains keeping their hands down while sending a silent message.
I’ve not yet heard an explanation from the players involved, if there was one, but regardless it would likely fall on deaf ears to a fan base embarrassed by such a classless gesture.
First and foremost, dissing your opponent with such a lack of respect is just not the way we do things here in Nebraska. Shaking hands is such a simple act of good manners and respect. Refusing the gesture screams for attention, none of it good. Even an undefeated team on the brink of a playoff bid would get bad press for such a no-hands gesture, and deservedly so.
Husker football has come a long, long way this season, with the first bowl season in years awaiting as a sign that this team and program are headed in the right direction. This glaring faupaux seems out of character, and quite frankly out of place for a 6-6 team that has no business sending so much attitude before a rivalry game. Just play football fellas, and let your actions do the talking.
You are better than that, Huskers! GBR
