A fitting tribute
Veteran’s Day offers a moment to reflect on freedom, security
As we approach Veterans Day, we stand united in gratitude for the men and women who have selflessly served our country.
This day, dedicated to honoring veterans, is a moment for all Americans to reflect on the freedom and security we enjoy — benefits that often come at a profound personal cost to those who wear the uniform. Each of our veterans has a story — a story of resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to a higher calling.
Veterans are not just soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines; they are parents, siblings, friends, and neighbors. They have carried burdens few can understand, and many have endured experiences that have forever changed them. Some have returned home to start new careers, raise families, and contribute to their communities, while others continue to fight unseen battles. They deserve not just our thanks, but our steadfast support in every area of life, from healthcare to housing to mental health services.
This week’s ANR reflects that sentiment. It’s an absolute privilege to publish names and photos of local area veterans, shining the spotlight where it is most deserved. It’s also a pleasure to offer veterans a chance to tell their stories in detail, though most would humbly defer if truth be told.
This year’s tribute shares the military experiences of two local veterans including Don Harvey of Aurora and Carol Robotham of Marquette. We appreciate their service immensely, as well as their willingness to share their stories. We also invite you to look over the many photos of veterans with a local connection, many who are no longer with us. All deserve our thanks, as well as a moment of silent prayer.
This Veterans Day, let us go beyond ceremonial gestures and commit to real actions that support and honor those who have given so much. We can volunteer with veteran support organizations, listen to veterans’ stories, and advocate for policies that prioritize their well-being. Let’s also remember that for many veterans, the journey to healing and adjustment continues long after their service ends. They should not walk this path alone.
In this spirit of remembrance and gratitude, let us pay tribute to our veterans with the respect and appreciation they so deeply deserve. Their legacy is not only written in history, but also lived out every day in the freedom and peace they have fought to preserve.
To all our veterans, thank you.
