You may have noticed the Betterhalf had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. All of this came from a short story with a much delayed ending. Let’s begin this tale from about a month ago when our grandson and his wife dined with us.
The young couple, during table conversation, handed me a long sheet of what appeared to be a series of negatives called a scan and then asked me what I was looking at. My inexperience showed and I told the group I had no idea. The young couple then giggled and told us that we were going to become great grandparents and it was a scan from the doctor’s office. And then they announced the bombshell . . . there were two images on that scan and that represented twins! Of course, the Betterhalf went ballistic with her excitement.
Her excitement was dampened when the couple asked her not to tell anyone until Thanksgiving because they wanted to announce the news later to the granddaughter’s family at her family’s big dinner. So, for the past few weeks, the Betterhalf has been under quite a bit of stress. Now the wait is over and more details have been released. The two blips I saw on the scan now have been identified as identical twin girls, due in April.
As for me, I haven’t quite got accustomed to the word, “great-grandfather” since my only personal family experience has been around my limited help over the past 60 years in the raising of three sons and later four grandsons. This “girl thing” and a great grandfather is definitely going to be something new.
First, what are we going to do with all those three generations of “boy toys” from three generations stored in our basement? With tongue in cheek there may be an out. The Betterhalf said, “You realize their dad is named ‘Tom’ and the twin girls could become ‘Tom boys.’” So much for the Betterhalf’s pun.
In all honesty, I’m sure little girls can wrap me around their little fingers and direct me to their own liking. In the meantime we pray all goes well and some youngins will arrive next April to make our growing old easier and much more enjoyable.
