Young musicians share time, talent, very special celebration
Extra! Extra! Newsies musical a smashing success!!!
That was the headline this week from Aurora High School, where the talents of our community’s best and brightest young musicians exploded on stage in a feel-good presentation that felt very much like a trip to Broadway. This was top-notch entertainment, to be sure, highlighted by spot-on vocals and a contagious energy level that poured over a full-house audience.
The fact that we could all gather in the theater as one — for five different performances — to hear the Newsies of the day was in and of itself cause for celebration. It’s been a full calendar year since the pandemic silenced theaters and shut down life as we know it in so many ways across our state, nation and world, so just being able to be part of such a phenomenal community experience was invigorating.
And then the music began. Oh! My! Goodness!
This one was really special, as musicals go. The casting was phenomenal, with leads bringing their characters to life in words and song, creating a truly professional vibe. The entire ensemble brought an energy level demanded by the storyline, nailing the choreography, staging, songs and script time after time. Seriously, this was Lied Center quality entertainment, right here in A-Town. Some of those young folks have music in their future if they choose to pursue it, and if not this show will be a forever memory in their highlight reel. It was most certainly a highlight for all who saw it.
Aurora’s music program has developed a stellar reputation over the years, with the every-other-year musical offering a unique format to showcase that talent. Can you imagine how tragic it would have been if COVID had silenced the stage, robbing students (especially seniors) and everyone involved of this experience? Fortunately, 2020 was an off year, literally, though there had to be uncertainty and angst as the school year began about whether changing protocols would in fact let the show go on in late March.
Anyone who has ever been part of such a major high school production, as well as their parents, knows full well what a huge commitment is required of time and energy. Director Jason Frew, Assistant Director Karrie Wiarda and all the folks behind the scenes who helped write the Newsies headline deserve two thumbs up for making it happen.
The community owes YOU, cast and crew, a heart-felt thank you for such a stellar performance. You did in fact “Seize the Day” and helped a grateful audience do the same.
