Does Niagara Falls, Platte ever freeze over?
With cold temperatures jumping around here this winter we became curious of historical cold weather impacts on open waters after driving over the bridge spanning an iced-over Platte River. The subject then jumped to wondering what about Niagara Falls and if it ever freezes over.
We found the last time Niagara Falls froze solid was in 1848 on both the Canadian and American sides. But the Falls never froze over in 1848 on their own right because when Lake Erie had frozen over it created an ice jam that shallowed the river flow to the Falls.
The most recent near-solid freezing came in February 2021 and that wasn’t a solid freezing, but one that just iced the edges on both the Canadian and American river banks.
Well, maybe there is something about climate change. However, we’re still not completely convinced when we talk to our son in Minnesota this past week and he reported on temp of 32 below and said it was in middle 40 belows reported the previous night.

An English visitor was on his first visit to Niagara Falls and the guide was trying to impress him with its magnificence.
“Grand,” said the guide. The visitor didn’t seem impressed. “Millions of gallons a minute,” explained the guide. “How many gallons a day?” asked the tourist. “Oh, billions and billions,” answered the guide.
The visitor looked across, and down and up, as if gauging the flow. Then he turned away with a shrug, apparently unaffected. “Runs all night, too, I suppose,” he remarked.

As a retired newspaperman, we feel it’s only fair to laugh at ourselves too.
Editor: “Do you know how to run a newspaper?”
Applicant: “No, sir.”
Editor: “Well, we’ll try you. You talk like you had experience.”

“It has been observed that those who have hobbies rarely go crazy,” asserts a psychiatrist. Yeah, but what about those who have to live with those who have hobbies?
And remember, “If troubles aren’t big enough to pray about, then they certainly aren’t big enough to worry and fret about.”
