Now three months into 2022, the time is here for producers across the state to be looking into “beefing up” their cattle herds before or after calving season. 
The Nebraska Center for Agricultural Profitability aimed to help farmers and ranchers with its Feb. 10 webinar, “Beef Heifer Replacement Forecasts for the 2022 Production Season.” 
“Year in and year out cow producers make decisions related to maintaining the cow herd and of course its profitability,” began Matt Stockton, UNL agricultural economist and farm management specialist. “Decisions today make a big difference in the future of that profitability and what happens and whether that ranch is profitable, so it’s very important to make those choices.”
One of these choices, Stockton added, is the choice to retain or purchase replacement heifers in order to keep the herd at a size the producer can afford to have.
