Producers were invited to attend the State of the Hemp Union seminar at the Nebraska Farm Expo Feb. 23 in Lincoln. There Trevor Johnson, hemp program manager with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, gave an overview of the hemp program in Nebraska.
He began with a history of farming hemp in the state, noting that the 2014 Farm Bill first authorized the cultivation of hemp for research purposes under a pilot program.
“The 2015 Nebraska Industrial Hemp Statue authorized Nebraska to operate under the 2014 Farm Bill,” he said. “It allowed postsecondary institutions to begin cultivating hemp.”
By the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp was removed from the controlled substance list. Johnson explained that in 2019 the NDA was authorized to issue licensing agreements as part of a pilot program.
