The annual Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute (NAYI) is a week-long event for high school students to gather, network and gain education about future careers.
Emma Snoberger was one of the around 150 high school students from across the state that was selected to participate in this year’s event.
The event kicked off with rotating groups through different animal production sessions that included dairy, beef, swine, poultry, equine, sheep and goat speakers.
“They talked about their section of the agricultural industry,” she said. “That afternoon we did this farm management game that went throughout the week. We were given a market situation and we had the opportunity to choose each of the crops for our six fields.”
She noted they learned a lot about the market and in the end ditched their contracts because they were losing money. With a laugh, she added that on the final day they made the most money, taking them from eighth out of eight to sixth place.
