More often than not, Diane Torson could get her point across with just a look. Way more often than not, a simple look led to winning seasons and state championships for the Hampton volleyball team.
After 36 years and almost 700 victories, Torson is stepping away from the coach’s seat for the Lady Hawk program she helped build into a powerhouse brand among the smaller Class D crowd.
“It’s been fun. It’s hard to believe I’ve coached for 36 years -- it’s went by fast,” Torson said in a sit-down conversation inside Hampton’s coaches office last week. “There were a lot of ups and downs, but a lot more ups with great support from the community and school.”
Torson steps away from the Hampton volleyball program after 36 seasons, posting a 675-282 career record with three state championships, a 17-11 record at the state tournament, five CRC championships as well as five CRC runner-up finishes.
The longtime Hampton coach was recognized last fall as part of the NSAA’s 50th anniversary of Title IX and 50th year of Nebraska State volleyball championships as a major contributor.
