Sophia Buller, age 96, of Henderson, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Legacy Square in Henderson. Sophia was born on August 8, 1927, to John C. and Lena (Penner) Quiring on a farm in Hamilton County. She accepted Christ and was baptized by A.W. Friesen and became a member of Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson on May 28, 1944. She attended a rural county school until 8th grade in Hamilton County. Sophia then enjoyed helping at home with her brothers and sisters and was a Nanny for several families in the area.
On September 12, 1945, she was united in marriage to Jacob H. Buller at Bethesda Mennonite Church. From this marriage they were blessed with seven children: Marvin, Darlene, Wanda, Dianne, Ardell, Kristi, and Paul. Dad and Mom lived on various farms in Hamilton and York Counties until they retired in 1998 at which time they moved to Henderson where she lived until her passing. Before retiring, Mom enjoyed farming with dad and working in housekeeping at a couple different motels in York County and at the Henderson Health Care Nursing Home.
Mom loved her family and enjoyed life: reading her Bible daily, spending many hours in her garden, baking and cooking for her family, sewing and embroidering for her family, and babysitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family has many fond memories of all the family gatherings and the treats (zwieback, pancakes with sugar, rice with milk and cinnamon, Christmas cookies, and chocolate chip cookies) that she always had on-hand when they would stop in for a visit. In warmer weather, she could always be found outside weed-eating or raking the leaves. Mom’s favorite quote was “and that’s the way it is!”
Sophia is survived by her sons, Marvin (Pat) Buller of Henderson and Ardell Buller of York; daughter, Kristi (Curt) Jensen of Gresham; son-in-law, Lowell (Terry) Johnson of Fairmont, and daughter-in-law, RaNee Buller of York; grandchildren, Denton (Linda) Buller of York, Dana Boehr of York, Dacia (Patrick) Peters of Waverly, Dawn Caddy of Ravenna, Danny Powell and Jacob Powell of St. Paul, Eric (Jessie) Johnson of Milligan, Justin Johnson of Geneva, Ross (Elane) Johnson of Valentine, Victoria Tonniges (Dillon Vice) of Lincoln, Rebekah (Sam) Eilers of Firth, Malynda (David) Oborny of David City, Mariah Jensen (Peyton Watts) of Osceola, Noah Jensen of Gresham, Lisa Buller, Jacob Buller and Kristin Buller, all of York; great-grandchildren, Carson Buller, Connor (Kori) Boehr, Nolan and Allie Boehr, Hayden and Landry Peters, Jesse Caddy, Kati Caddy (Brian Kirkland), Liberty, Logan and Toby Johnson, Kynzley and Alayna Johnson, Henry, Sam and Maddie Johnson, Layne and Bowen Tonniges, Dutton Vice, Evelynn and Maeve Eilers, Malachi and Alaric Oborny; great-great-grandchildren, twins Lily and Ivy Kirkland, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
