Wally, the first cow to be raised from birth to two years old at Hampton Public School, was processed in a USDA-inspected facility in Henderson Feb. 23, offering a valuable lesson to students as to where meat comes from.
According to HPS ag teacher and FFA advisor Joel Miller, Wally was the first cow at HPS to be processed for beef in school lunches, providing as well a learning opportunity for students participating in FFA and in the HPS ag program.
“We fed out some steers that came from a feedlot or what have you, but this was the first one where we bought this cow and she calved here at school,” Miller said. “So it’s a full cycle from birth to end.”
