Just two weeks after competing in their respective state football championships, Aurora and Adams Central's boys basketball teams met in a season-opening matchup that included hot three-point shooting and tough defense in the paint.

In the end, Aurora made enough free throws down the stretch to defeat the Patriots on the road, 50-44.

The Huskies got several big plays from Tate Nachtigal, who led the Huskies with 17 points, including 13 in the first half. Down the stretch, Aurora made five of six free throws in the final minute -- all by Andrew Bell -- to hang on as Adams Central extended the game with two three-pointers.

In the girls game, a strong third quarter on both ends of the floor from Adams Central helped defeat the Lady Huskies, 56-38.

Adams Central outscored Aurora 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 25-18 halftime lead to 41-24 after three.

The Lady Huskies were led in scoring by Raina Cattau's 12 points.

Aurora is back on the road Friday night, taking on Wahoo.
