Aurora wins season opener at Lakeview

The Aurora girls wrestling team looked to already be in midseason form during its first competition of the winter season.
The Lady Huskies took top honors at Friday’s Columbus Lakeview Invite, bringing in 172 points ahead of Lakeview’s 141 in second.
Aurora coach Sheri Thompson was more than pleased following the season opener, noting she was hopeful for a big start after how successful practices had been.
“They have been working hard at practices and had a great mindset going into the first tournament,” Thompson said. “They had a goal of winning the tournament and they came through with that goal. It was a total team effort and they supported each other through each and every match.”
Aurora featured four first place finishers, including Aubrie Beed at 105, Paityn Wyatt at 115, Angelina Leininger at 130 and Emily Bohlman at 135.
Thompson noted both Beed and Leininger were strong throughout the day and remains laser focused on their end goal of returning to state and winning in Omaha.
As for Wyatt, Thompson shared that no one works harder in the practice room than her.
“I was super excited for Paityn,” the coach said. “She is one of the hardest working girls at practice and to see her hard work pay off was gratifying for not only Paityn, but for us as coaches. Paityn’s confidence continues to grow and I am excited to see what the season holds for her.”
Bohlman also picked up a win for the Huskies and according to Thompson has made a ton of strides since last year.
“Emily has definitely gotten stronger this year and shows focus and very little signs of being nervous when she steps onto the mat,” the coach said.
The Huskies also had several second place efforts from the likes of Caly Settles at 110, Natalie Bisbee at 120 and Briana Onnen at 155.
Third place finishers included Kaetlyn Young at 125, Londyn Teahon at 140 and Violet Carstensen at 145.
“Each girl was beyond excited and their compassion and support for each teammate at each mat was very noticeable,” Thompson said about winning the season opener. “Every single girl on the team won at least one match and they all got the feel of success. Throughout each match, the entire team was matside and cheered each and every teammate on -- whether they won or lost.”
Aurora will be back in action over the weekend across the border, competing at Riverside, Iowa for a tournament before hosting its own event Dec. 14.
While Aurora saw a good amount of success Friday, Thompson said the girls are right back to work on the little things to keep improving.
“We, as a team, need to focus on finishing our moves and not giving up simple points that we can earn or defend,” she said. “There were many close matches that we could have won so we will head back to practice with those focusing on those points of emphasis. Each week we will get better, but overall, I am very pleased with how well our girls and the entire team performed at Lakeview.”
