Mary Ellen Jacobs, the daughter of Charles F. and Agnes (Piper) May, was born in Aurora, Illinois on August 28, 1927 and passed away in Aurora, on October 9, 2024, at the age of 97.
Mary moved to Lincoln as a child. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945 and from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1949 majoring in botany and completing her teaching certificate. Mary taught at Country School District 47, north of Murphy, for two years.
On May 26, 1951, she was united in marriage to O. Dwain Jacobs in Lincoln. They farmed west of Aurora for 48 years, until they retired and moved to Aurora in 1999.
She enjoyed living on the farm, working with her flower gardens, loved all animals, and collected many strays that migrated to their farm. In addition to working as a farm wife, she also had short stints of part-time work at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, and a health food store in Grand Island. She and Dwain loved to go for car rides. They didn’t travel to far-off places, but probably traversed most of the roads in Nebraska.
She attended and was involved in various women’s ministries of the First Christian Church and Monroe Evangelical Free Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 2, 2010; her parents; brother, Robert May, of Rogers, Arkansas; four nephews and a niece.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Jerry Jacobs of Phillips; daughter, Joy Jacobs of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Walter (Ardis) Jacobs of Aurora, a niece and three nephews and other family.
