Hastings man dies in rollover near Aurora
Witnesses say the victim was ejected from the vehicle
A rollover accident on I-80 near Aurora took the life of a Hastings man early Tuesday afternoon. Calls began coming into the Hamilton County 911 Dispatch Center at about 1 p.m. Tuesday from other drivers who had witnessed the crash in the eastbound lane near mile marker 336. Multiple callers to 911 reported the driver had been ejected from the vehicle.
Hamilton County Sheriff Jeromy McCoy says a preliminary investigation found that Adrian Washington, 25, of Hastings was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata at a high rate of speed and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled numerous times in the south ditch of the interstate before coming to rest in a soybean field. The vehicle could be seen in an image from a nearby Nebraska 511 traffic cam.
Hampton Fire Department and Aurora Fire and Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the driver to the Aurora Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A helicopter was initially called in to transport the injured man to a hospital in Lincoln but was later cancelled.
“The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office expresses our condolences to the Washington family,” McCoy said. “We would also like to express our gratitude to the numerous motorists who called 911 and attempted to care for Mr. Washington’s injuries before emergency personnel arrived on the scene.”
