Jim Ediger and Matt Warren won championship honors this weekend in the annual Member/Guest Tournament held at Poco Creek Golf Course in Aurora.
The winning team from the 40-team field advanced from 27 holes of pool play on Friday, playing in ideal conditions Friday and Saturday after a Thursday evening storm disrupted a nine-hole ladies event.
Ediger and Warren were tied for 14th after Friday’s action, which advanced the duo into a field of 20 teams competing in the championship bracket. Five teams advanced to the horserace finals, which started on hole No. 1 with at least one team being eliminated each hole based on combined team scores (adjusted for handicap), or by a closest to the hole chipping contest.
There was some drama in the stretch run, as Ediger and Warren stood tied with Cy Carlson and Jared Nielsen on the ninth and had to play the hole again to determine the winner. Warren sunk a key par putt on the final hole to finally decide the champion.
Third place went to the team of Adam Darbro and Tyler Janky, while Chad Svoboda and Caden Svoboda finished fourth and Warren Anderson and Paul Splain took fifth.
Also advancing to Saturday’s championship bracket match play finals, in order of qualifying finish, were the teams of Phil Fendt and Lucas Wood, Jesse Dubas and Isaac Samuelson, Justin Kosmicki and Jason Melcher, Ethan Shaw and Thomas Crawford, Tim Carlson and Mitch Darbro, Justin Makovicka and Chase Newman, Brock Kohtz and Aaron Armon, Kirk Helgoth and Brian Beck, Cole Ashby and Jordan Damkroger, Brock Wyatt and Chris Stewart, Jeremy Cattau and Nick Zakrzewski, Wade Regier and Ryan Sherwood, Dave Vettel and Tim Vettel, Matt Shaw and Cory Shaw, Lucas Hieb and John Dealey.
In the consolation bracket, the team of Zach Danhauer and Brian Luhr took top honors, with second place going to Todd Bellis and Cory Mescher. The duo of Steve Akerson and Ty Wendt placed third, with Ben McQuiston and Michael Hadden fourth and Luke Samuelson and Brian Samuelson fifth.
