Jack was born on August 18, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Donald ‘David’ and Miriam (Aiken) Henry. He was raised in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High Class of 1968. He was proud that he was captain of the wrestling team, a sport continued by several family members. He attended Hastings Community College. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1970-1974. He married the love of his life, Libby Eihusen, on December 29, 1971. They were blessed with two children: daughter, Nikki, and son, Jack R.
When Jack was discharged from the Navy, Jack and Libby moved to Johnson Lake where he became co-owner and housing development manager at Lakeview Acres. During their time there, they were a part of the first team of First Responders in Nebraska, and helped to facilitate the development of Johnson Lake EMS.
In 1980, Jack began working as a salesman for Bonnavilla Homes, a division of Chief Industries. He later became Director of Purchasing and then General Manager. In 2000, he was named President.
Jack was active in the Aurora community as well. He served on leadership boards with several organizations over the years including Aurora Development Corporation, Aurora Chamber of Commerce, United Methodist Church, and Aurora Country Club. The volunteer work he was most fond of and dedicated the most time to serving was the Aurora Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. During this time, Jack and Libby traveled the world. Upon retirement in 2009, they moved back to Johnson Lake.
Jack had a very special relationship with each of his eight grandchildren. It is with great certainty they will share his stories and sense of humor and sense of play. They will likely follow his example of being very good role models. They each knew they were deeply loved.
Boats seemed to be a common thread in so much of the family and friend fun. Hence, the name, “Captain Jack.” Jack never met a stranger; people were simply friends he didn’t yet know. He was always genuinely happy to see people, generous with his time and helpful with his talents whenever there was an opportunity to lend a hand. Jack attracted friendships, he added value to those around him, he brought light into rooms while leaving people in a better place at the end of each encounter.
Jack also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, the Big Red and the Chiefs. However, his favorite pastime was playing cards. Games of pitch broke out whenever and wherever opportunities arose. Jack and Libby wintered in Gold Canyon, AZ, for several years until Jack’s health prevented them from going. The last two years they wintered in Grand Island to be closer to family and heart specialists.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Libby; daughter Nikki and son-in-law Josh Erickson and son Jack R. and daughter-in-law Abby Henry; grandchildren, Cali, Nina, Chaz, Emry, and Ivey Erickson, and Jackson, Isaac, and Lydia Henry; siblings Thomas (Corinne) Henry, Diane (Doug) Smith, James (Patricia) Henry, sister-in-law Terri Eihusen Rank; many nieces and nephews, not to forget the many close friends he adored.
He is preceded in death by nephews David and Kristopher Henry; parents David Henry and Miriam Henry; brothers-in-law Samuel Rank and Robert Eihusen; parents-in-law Margarette ‘Margie’ Eihusen and Virgil Eihusen.
