Laurence Read
Laurence Read (88) of Walnut Creek, CA, passed away January 11, 2023 surrounded by his children. Born October 21, 1934 in Inland, Laurence moved to the Bay Area while serving in the U.S. Army. After leaving the Army Laurence joined Contra Costa County Fire Department where he served for 30 years. He met, and married Janet Brant, where they established their family home in Walnut Creek.
In addition to being a fire fighter Laurence was instrumental in establishing the Walnut Creek Equestrian Center, located at Heather Farms Park, where the main arena is named after him. Over the years Laurence was involved in local 4-H, president of the California Horsemen’s Association and worked at Cash & Carry Restaurant Supply store where he was famous for demonstrating how to deep fry a turkey.
Known for his shy smile and quick wit, Laurence always wanted to help others. He liked to carve wooden figurines while sitting on the patio and watching the birds. He loved to cook and did so up until the end. He was a long-time head cook for the local ECV Clamper Chapter (aka E Clampus Vitus) traveling around the state cooking at events and entering bean contests. Laurence created his own BBQ spice mix that flavored everything he cooked. Every weekend there was some type of dinner planned for neighbors and friends.
Laurence joins his wife Janet, who passed away December 25, 2004, and his daughter Loretta Beckwith who passed away November 2, 2007. Laurence is survived by his daughter, Genny Drake, and son, Carl Read, his grandchildren Tiffany and Jake Spencer, Jennifer Porter, JJ Drake and 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Eileen Eastman of Giltner and 12 nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held on February 10 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Rd., Walnut Creek, CA.
