Miller & Assoc. will study proposed GI/Giltner pipeline
The engineering firm of Miller and Associates has been selected by the Village of Giltner to conduct a preliminary study for a proposed pipeline that would transport drinking water to the southwest Hamilton County village from Grand Island.
Giltner Village Board Chairman Cody Nuss said last week that after reviewing bids from several engineering firms, the board decided recently to award the contract to Miller which he said is “pretty prominent in this area.”
The proposed pipeline is being necessitated by the fact that Giltner has high levels of manganese in its water supply. The pipeline, which is expected to pass within a short distance of the community of Phillips, would also be a benefit to that village. Phillips is currently under an EPA administrative order because of high levels of uranium in its well water. Phillips officials hope to tie into the Giltner water line, which they say would be at much less cost than constructing a water treatment plant for the community.
Phillips is not eligible for federal funding to fix its water problems, however, Giltner does quality for full funding which benefits both communities.
Nuss said the entire pipeline study will be funded by the state and stated the village is currently waiting for paperwork to be completed for funding of the study before it can begin.
