Meet and greet event planned July 22 at 10th Street site

Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity (GIAHFH) has announced the acquisition of four pieces of land in the City of Aurora.
This expansion is a part of the board of director’s strategic plan to expand programming into all four counties within the organization’s service area. The purchase in Aurora is the first step towards the goal of consistently building in Hamilton, Merrick, Howard, and Hall counties.
“We are thankful to Mike and Beverly Nolan for presenting Habitat with the opportunity to purchase these lots only one week after adoption of the strategic plan,” said Alyssa Heagy, executive director of the Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity. “You both were the answer to our prayers. Habitat houses will be built on these lots over the next several years, with applications for the Home Loan Program opening in December of this year with construction anticipated to begin in 2025.”
Qualified applicants must meet the three program criteria of “ability to pay, willingness to partner, and need for decent, affordable housing.” GIAHFH will also be offering a variety of volunteer opportunities for community members to come together to build the Habitat Houses.
GIAHFH will be hosting a meet and greet celebration July 22 from 1-3 p.m. on its lots located at 415 10th St., in Aurora. Staff members will host games and have information about Habitat on hand to answer any questions.

About GIAHFH
Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization dedicated to creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. GIAHFH works in partnership with families in need to build and rehabilitate homes, providing affordable housing solutions. By bringing people together to build, GIAHFH fosters a sense of community, promotes self-reliance, and enhances the quality of life for individuals and families.
GIAHFH offers the Home Loan Program, which provides eligible applicants with the opportunity to purchase affordable homes. To qualify for the program, applicants must meet three essential criteria:
Ability to pay: Applicants must demonstrate a stable income and the ability to afford monthly mortgage payments, including taxes, insurance, and utilities.
Willingness to partner: Families selected for the program must be willing to contribute “sweat equity” by actively participating in the construction of their own home or other Habitat projects.
Need for decent, affordable housing: Applicants must demonstrate their current housing situation is inadequate, unsafe, unaffordable, or overcrowded.
GIAHFH believes in the power of volunteerism and encourages community members to get involved. There are various volunteer opportunities available, including construction work, fundraising events, and administrative support. By volunteering with GIAHFH, individuals can make a tangible impact and help create a positive change in their community.
