HCF seeks input for project on
Hamilton building
The Hamilton Community Foundation Fine Arts Committee is looking for an artist to create a mural that creates a sense of place within the community.
The goals of this project are to enhance and invigorate a focal area of the historic downtown district, as the mural will be created on the north wall of a Hamilton Telecommunications building located at 1001 12th St. The project is also intended to reflect the pride and uniqueness in the community, create art that provides inspiration, color and vibrancy; and provides an intersection between past, present and future.
“The mission of the foundation focuses on building opportunity and we want to ensure that the arts and humanities are at the heart of that,” said Tammy Morris, the foundation’s executive director. “The arts bring people together and we are grateful to Hamilton Telecommunications for their partnership.”
“We’re very supportive of the project, and I am confident it will be a positive addition to the square,” added John Nelson, Hamilton’s president and CEO.
As for selection criteria, the public art selection committee, along with voice from the building owner, will select the proposal based on the artist’s prior experience, examples of work, and ability to meet the project goals and timeline. Submissions should include the following: a current resume detailing professional artistic accomplishments and references from past public art projects; digital images of past projects; project approach articulating design concept, choice/list of materials and related costs, site preparation and anticipated requirements; visual representation of project proposal – sketch or computer-generated drawing
Design considerations include the artistic surface, which is a brick wall on the south side of a well-maintained building at 1001 12th St. There is approximately 1,440 square foot of potential mural space. (18 feet high by 60 feet wide).
Note also that there will be times in the winter where snow is pushed up against the bottom of the building.
The chosen design will tie in Hamilton County with a theme that is welcoming, community-minded, colorful, and provides an intersection between the past, present and future (no social/political jargon and images).
Approaches may include Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Avant-garde, Bauhaus, Baroque, Classicism, Fauvism, Futurism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Precisionism, Rococo, Street Art.
Artist should include a proposed recommendation of how the art will be best displayed to the public.
The budget should include a detailed listing of cost for materials, equipment and scaffolding, insurance, artist fees and any other expenses related to the project. The artist will be responsible for materials, equipment and insurance.
Deadline for submission is July 12. The winner will be notified by July 31, with installation completion expected by Oct. 27, 2023.
