Orvillene DeFern Berg, the daughter of Orville and Berniece Bowerman, was born in Little Sioux, Iowa on October 17, 1929 and passed away in Lincoln, on November 17, 2022, at the age of 93.
She was the oldest of five children: Orvillene, Nadine, Duane, and Donald are each two years apart. Her youngest sister, Etta Jane, is 15 years younger than Orvillene.
She was united in marriage to Alfred Hedum in 1947. With Alfred being in the Navy caused them to move to the West Coast. And countless other moves as well. They had four children: Kenneth (lived only six months), Sharron, Marilyn, and Pearlene.
She spent two years learning to become a beautician. Following this, in 1961, Alfred and Orvillene divorced. She returned to the Midwest with three young daughters, residing in Omaha for several years.
She was united in marriage to Clifford Berg in November of 1964. Clifford had lost his wife to cancer and added two young daughters, Linda and Chris, to the family. This is when they moved to Onawa, Iowa.
Orvillene worked as a beautician for over 40 years, most of those years from the beauty shop (Orvillene’s Beauty Nook) located in a renovated back bedroom of their house. Her customers were very special to her, and she treated them like family. Orvillene retired and moved to Aurora in 2001. This allowed her to be much closer to two of her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Due to health concerns she moved to the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings in 2012. She moved to Lancaster Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln in the fall of last year.
Orvillene enjoyed spending time with family, including her church family. She was as active as she could be in her churches and enjoyed her time with the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Nadine; brother Duane; infant son, Kenneth, daughter Sharron Mousel, and son-in-law Larry Martenson.
Those left to cherish her memory are her family including: son-in-law Larry Joe Mousel of Aurora, daughters Marilyn (Richard) Lauer of St. Paul, MN and Pearlene Martenson of Bellevue; son Robert (Ruth) Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA; Linda (JR) Ashburn of Ackworth, IA; and Chris Howe of Hinton, IA; brother Donald Bowerman of Greeley, CO; sister Etta Jane (Jim) Brainard of Omaha; grandchildren: Martha (Steve) Saddler; Michelle (Mike) Hopson; Melissa Martenson; Jason (Megan) Martenson; Alex (Cara) Lauer; Ted (Nadia) Lauer; Hannah (Matthew) Schreier; Joel and Justin Hoekstra; great-grandchildren: Rebecca and Allison Saddler; Jordan and Davis Martenson; Wyatt Schreier and Zosia Lauer plus many other family members and friends.
