Barb Hansen has a thick folder full of papers she has saved over the years during her 19-year career as an educator, but it has nothing to do with curriculum or classroom preparation. Instead, it’s a treasure trove of assignments or notes written by former students who shared a word of thanks or a memory years after leaving her classroom. That folder means the world to Hansen, who will be retiring in May as a veteran elementary teacher at Aurora Public Schools. Her story can be found on page A4 of this week's edition of the Aurora News-Register.

The Optimist Youth Soccer league got off to a successful running start this spring with 408 K-6 students participating for six Saturday mornings continuing through May 11. The weather Saturday morning was breezy with enough sun for the players to shine in their second games of the season. And we have the photos in this week's ANR.

In early February of last year an article in the News-Register reported the rather alarming news that due to declining attendance, Aurora’s 12th Street Theater, run by the non-profit Hamilton Recreation, might be on the verge of closing after a 30-year run. Today, 14 months later there is no talk of closure among the theater’s leadership, however, there are still challenges to be overcome and attendance continues to be an issue. In a front page article in this week's ANR, we hear from three of the leaders of the theater who discuss the unique challenges face by small town theaters like 12th Street Cinema and how volunteers and community organizations are making a difference for the family-focused non-profit.

The campaign will open with Pre-GIVE  on Monday, April 22 which will continue until the one-day fundraising event on Thursday, May 2. Get all the details on the annual campaign and find out which local organizations are participating on Page 1 of this week's ANR.

With the Nebraska Primary Election just four weeks away on May 14, ANR has been bringing you all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding the ballot issues and candidates. This week, we profile the three candidates running for the GOP nomination for the open District 3 seat on the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners. Meet the candidates and hear their priorities and policies in their own words on page A3 of this week's paper.
