Primary Election set for Tuesday

Voters will decide on candidates, tax, school bond issue

Depending on where they live, Hamilton County voters will have a range of candidates and issues to vote on in the Primary Election next Tuesday, May 14. The one constant for Republican voters will, of course, be the presidential primary and various statewide and district-wide elections.
Three candidates appear on the Republican Presidential Ticket, including Nikki Haley, Perry Johnson and Donald J. Trump. However, Nebraska is a write-in state so there is a blank for writing in the name of a candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot.
Both sitting U.S. Senators from Nebraska are on the ballot this year and both have one or more primary challengers. Sen. Deb Fischer is running for another six-year term in the Senate and is facing a challenge from Arron Kowalski. Meanwhile, Sen. Pete Ricketts, who was appointed by Gov. Jim Pillen to fill out the unexpired term of Sen. Ben Sasse, is seeking a two-year term. He is being challenged for that seat by John Glen Weaver and Mac Stevens.
Dist. 3 U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith also faces a re-election challenge from John Walz and Robert McCuiston.
On the state ticket, incumbent Tim Schram is running unopposed for a six-year term as District 3 Public Service Commissioner.
Republicans in Hamilton County’s Commission District 3 will be choosing between commission candidates Tanner Holloway, Troy Holloway and Jessie Merkel.
Meanwhile, Aurora voters will decide whether the city should add a 1-1/2 percent sales tax.
In Giltner, residents will have two tax-related issues to decide. Voters in the Giltner School District will decide whether or not an $11.4 million bond issue will go forward to finance major upgrades to the K-12 school’s facilities. In addition, voters in the Village of Giltner will decide whether or not to add a 1 percent sales tax to purchases made within the village.
In Hamilton County, Precincts 1-6 are mail-in voting only and ballots have been mailed out to those registered voters. Voters in Precinct 7 which includes Bluff and the east half of Otis Precinct will vote at the Hordville Event Center and voters in the South Platte Precinct, Monroe north of 19 Road and the west half of Otis Precinct will vote at the Marquette Community Center/Fire Hall.
In the city of Aurora, all precincts are located in the Bremer Community Center. Ward 1 voting is in the Wortman Room, Ward 2 voting is in the West Room, north side and Ward 3 is in the West Room, south side.
Those wishing to vote early in person at the Hamilton County Clerk’s office may do so until the close of business on Monday and must provide an approved ID.
Polling places in Hamilton County will open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Note that the News-Register will delay printing next week's edition until Wednesday morning in order to provide timely election coverage. Printed copies will be available at the post office for subscribers and at news stands by 8 a.m. that day.
