A new season in a new classification starts with a familiar foe Friday when rival Grand Island Northwest comes to town for the traditional “Hammer Game.”
As soon as the 2022 football schedule was posted in February, coach Kyle Peterson said his Huskies had opening night circled on the calendar.
“It was pretty easy to get our kids’ attention all summer, knowing that you’re opening with Northwest,” Peterson admitted. “They’ve had really solid teams the last five or six years and they always seem to play their best against us. Even the years that they maybe haven’t been great, they’ve always played well against us. It’s going to be a physical game. It always is.”
The Huskies kick off the season with an air of confidence, having made it to the title game in Class B each of the last two years, finishing runner-up both times. Some of the same weapons that helped make that happen are back in the lineup this year, starting with Carlos Collazo, the team’s leading rusher from a year ago with 2,025 yards on 259 carries, 26 of those ending in the end zone.
