Planned inclusive playground a testament to community vision

Even before the first golden shovel pierced the ground last week, children were already at play on the site of the future Hamilton County Inclusive Playground. That joyful moment — kids of all abilities digging side by side — was a perfect symbol of what this project is all about: a community creating a space where inclusion is not just an idea, but a lived experience.
The $1.7 million fundraising goal, announced as achieved at the Sept. 24 groundbreaking, is itself a remarkable story. In just two years, through gifts large and small, local families, businesses and organizations rallied together to ensure this dream could become reality. From lemonade stands to golf tournaments, every dollar contributed carried the same message: every child deserves a place to belong.
What makes this project especially powerful is the personal passion behind it. Parents like Jennifer Heiden and Mariah Sorensen spoke movingly of wanting their children with disabilities to be seen, valued and included. Their vision challenges us all to look beyond traditional playground structures and imagine a space built for everyone; a place where lessons of kindness, compassion, and understanding are learned through play.
This initiative also demonstrates the strength of collaboration. From the guidance of the Hamilton Community Foundation and Tammy Morris, to the generosity of individuals like Linda Ross-Happy, to countless local supporters, this playground is proof that when a community works together, barriers can be broken down and new opportunities built up.
Years from now, when children are climbing, swinging, and laughing in this new park, parents will be able to point and say: “This started with a dream.” And more importantly, they will see the dream realized; not just of a playground, but of a community where inclusion is woven into the fabric of daily life.
As construction moves forward, let us carry that same spirit into other corners of our community. Inclusion is not simply a playground project; it is a mindset, a commitment, and a reflection of our values. The Hamilton County Inclusive Playground is a shining example of what happens when vision meets determination and generosity.
The ground has been broken. The work continues. And soon, the doors to play — and belonging — will be open to all.
