Clarifications on Gary Ross article
Dear Editor:
As the youngest daughter of Gary and JoEllen Ross I appreciate the article published in the July 9, 2025 edition of your paper. I wish to clarify a few things from the article that myself and my parents felt were inaccurate.
First, my parents were already married when my father enlisted in the army. Before being sent to Berlin, my father was stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts and my mom worked on the base as part of the Civil Service.
Second, my father was hired by IBM in 1968 while living in Aurora. He originally did repair typewriters, but as technology progressed he was trained on copiers, printers, and eventually mainframe computers. His training on mainframes led to our move to Columbus in 1989. My parents returned to Aurora in 2009 after their retirement to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Third, my parents probably did not mention all the organizations my dad was an active member of and often held leadership roles in. These include the Aurora Jaycees, the Aurora Lions Club, the Platte County Emergency Management Team and multiple committees while a member at both the Aurora and Columbus United Methodist churches. The article states he was on the board of the Columbus Museum. This is incorrect. After returning to Aurora he was on the board of the Plainsman Museum and also served on the Hamilton Community Foundation board. While in Columbus, my parents were active members of the Harold’s Squares square dance club and served as officers there as well as in the federation and state organizations.
My sisters and I have always been proud of our father and again we appreciate the article sharing his story.
Robyn Markussen,
Kearney
