Award presented in 7th Grade math class Wednesday by Commissioner of Education

Body

Scott Phillips was teaching his 7th Grade math class at Aurora Middle School at about 9:30 Wednesday morning when suddenly the door opened and a flood of TV and print reporters, school officials and Phillips' own family members poured into the classroom. They were led by Nebraska Commissioner of Education, Brian Maher to present Phillips with the 2024 Nebraska Teacher of the Year award.

Maher sought affirmation from the students as he told the classroom the marble apple award was being presented to Phillips because of his energy and the fact that he makes math relevant.

"And he makes math fun," Maher said, "and that's enough right there!"

Following the presentation, Phillips was asked questions by reporters along with two of his students who were also interviewed. Phillips is in his 14th year of teaching and will also participate in the National Teacher of the Year competition later this year. As part of his responsiblities, he will do quite a bit of traveling this year, getting to go to the White House and attending Space Camp in Florida. He was one of three finalists statewide for the honor.
